The Melanated Wellness Foundation was honored to join an inspiring night of advocacy, education, and community at the Guardian United Group Autism Benefit Gala, held at The Gathering Spot in Washington, D.C. This powerful event brought together leaders, advocates, and families to uplift and support Black families navigating autism—and raised over $3,000 to advance autism advocacy initiatives.
Our Founder & CEO, Erin Nkele, LCPC, joined Dr. Pam Dixon of Autism Speaks for an impactful Fireside Chat, hosted by Brettany Payne and sponsored by Alkali60. Together, they explored critical topics such as caregiver therapy, culturally competent care, and inclusive workplace training, sparking meaningful conversations that resonated deeply with the audience.
The evening featured remarks from Maryland State Senator Nick Charles and a heartfelt thank-you from Ann Gibbons of Autism Speaks. One of the most powerful moments came when Demek Adams shared his emotional story of raising twin sons on the autism spectrum—reminding everyone in the room why advocacy and community support matter so deeply.
> “The energy in the room was perfect,” shared Shenice Drakeford, Founder of Guardian United Group and Host of the Gala. “The goal was to provide the space to uplift families through advocacy, research, and care.”
We’re proud to stand alongside organizations and families working to ensure every child and caregiver receives the support, understanding, and resources they deserve.
